History of Mama Dances
The original idea was born out of necessity to negotiate around or incorporate a child into an artistic practice. Six dancers performed in the premiere of Mama dances/1000 mains at Chateau Du Fresne in Montreal during Festival Transatlantique, Manifestation de la Danse, September 2006.
Philosophy:
Healthy mothering is at the root of building a healthy society.
Mama dances responds to today's socio-political climate by contributing modalities of hope, peace and love to the world. It is a simple yet powerful idea. Seemingly naïve, it has a profound intention. Peace on earth. The world requires powerful mothering.
In Dancing Women, Female Bodies on Stage, Sally Banes writes: "choreographers have created images of women that are shaped by – and that in part shape – society's continuing debates about sexuality and female identity. I argue that the dance stage has often reflected and reinforced, but has also formed and in some cases criticized cultural conceptions of corporeality – in particular, conceptions of women's bodies and identities-and that through dance, men's attitudes toward women and women's attitudes about themselves are literally given body on stage."…p1
